 Solta is an island in the northern Dalmatian archipelago, southwest of Split. The Rogac cove and the Necujam cove are extremely indented. The west coast is surrounded by a group of small islands where you can go island hopping and find you own little space and without being interrupted. All you need is a small boat to navigate around the number of islands.The Maslenica cove is suitable as a harbor for smaller ships. It is also the centre of fishery on this island.
The island is rich with vineyards and olive trees where often times are looked after by generations of families handed down from generation to generation. The locals seem to have their own stash of wines that they normally bring out for meals and what better way to enjoy it than with a wonderful Mediterranean view and climate.
Solta was first mentioned in the 5th century. All settlements on the island are connected by road. The largest settlement and the county seat is Grohote, with the population of 630. Some findings from the bronze age have been excavated here. The place has a defensive tower that was built centuries ago.
The church of St Mihovil has frescoes from the 14C. Malesnica has hotel by the name of "Necujam" and a large tower. Necujam is a tourist place. In the Middle Ages a salteru was situated here. There are some remains of Roman defensive wall. The "Olint" hotel is located in the settlement of Sutomorska. |
